Ayotzinapa, pain and hope

Seven years after what happened in the southern state of Guerrero, on the night and early morning of September 26 and 27, 2014, the remains of three students have been found and identified.

Also, three parents of the 43 have died while searching for their children. And some people who had something to do with the events of that night have been “mysteriously” murdered.

Despite the fact that it is already well known that the so called “historical truth” of the government of Enrique Peña Nieto (EPN) was a great farce built on the basis of political haste, torture and cover-ups, today, 7 years after the events, we still do not know where the boys are, who took them, where they were taken, and what they did with them.

The  investigation of the Ayotzinapa case was hampered during the last Presidential administration (2012-2018), which was very corrupt. However, a positive outcome is that Mexico has gone on to have a transparent government like never before, starting with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). Without pretence, without obstructions, without the rush to save anyone’s skin (as did the corrupt EPN government), today, three years after AMLO has been in power, the 43 are finally being searched for.

From September 2014 to 2018, during the EPN government, the cry heard often in the streets was, “It was the State!” Today, paradoxically, the State, with AMLO at the head of the government, works hard to get to the truth. And the Mexican people are eager to learn of the progress of these three years of exhaustive investigation.

Finding all the victims remains a monumental task. It is one of the biggest challenges for the AMLO government. I trust that sooner or later, before 2024, we will know the broad and definitive truth, a truth that I hope will bring relief to many.

Yes, let the police and the military fall, but also let businessmen, officials, politicians and white-collar criminals fall. All those who materially and intellectually played a role in the disappearance of the young students.

Seven years after the disappearance of the 43 from Ayotzinapa, there is still pain but there is also hope. Let’s say no to oblivion, no to impunity.

Solidarity with the mothers and fathers of the 43. Until we find them!
