Opinión: JUSTICE! Let’s start with the former presidents (Inglés)

For decades, Mexico has been the site of multiple regrettable events. And that is just part of why millions of Mexicans today demand that investigations be opened against former presidents (those who are still alive). Many believe that justice, if true, will inevitably have to go through the prosecution of former heads of state, as a way to show that things are changing.

Here are some terrible events that have occurred in Mexico in the previous decades:

Tlatelolco – On October 2, 1968, in Tlatelolco, Mexico City, soldiers massacred dozens of students who were in a demonstration. The main person in charge, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, in his defense and shamelessly, said that the students were the ones who shot and massacred their own companions.

Ayotzinapa – On the night of September 26, 2014, 43 students were disappeared. Municipal, state, and federal police, as well as the military, were involved. That night there were also deaths and injuries.

Tlatlaya – On June 30, 2014, in Tlatlaya, State of Mexico, 22 people were massacred by the military.

San Fernando – In August 2010, a criminal group massacred 72 migrants, men and women, Central and South American, in San Fernando, Tamaulipas.

Atenco – On May 3 and 4, 2006 in Atenco, State of Mexico, state and federal police tortured dozens of people. Women were sexually tortured, 2 young people lost their lives.

Acteal – On December 22, 1997, in the community of Acteal, Chenalhó, Chiapas, 45 indigenous Tzotziles (mostly women and girls) were massacred by the military.

Aguas Blancas – On June 28, 1995, in the community of Aguas Blancas (Coyuca de Benítes, Guerrero), 17 peasants were massacred by state police.

Colosio Affair – On March 23, 1994, in Tijuana, Baja California, the presidential candidate, Luis Donaldo Colosio, was assassinated.

52 years after the massacre in Tlatelolco, what the people of Mexico are demanding today is not revenge, it is justice. At present, the proposal for the trial of former presidents is to heal the wounds, heal the national traumas, and begin to move in the right direction.
