Una frustrada apuesta por la elegibilidad

De cara a los procesos electorales, sin importar su índole, son cuantiosas las rivalidades que surgen entre todos aquellos que aspiran a ocupar un cargo en el servicio público.

No pocas veces, la ambición desenfrenada de quienes se embarcan en esta empresa les lleva a montar meticulosas campañas de desprestigio hacia sus contrincantes y que, claramente, habrán de redundar en beneficio propio. No obstante, existen otras vías tanto superiores para limar estas asperezas y llegar a puntos de acuerdo.

En este mismo sentido, proponemos a nuestros lectores un curioso acertijo relacionado con estas vivencias de las que seguramente muchos hemos sido testigos.

ACERTIJO

Siete miembros de un prominente partido político, quienes se disputan la candidatura para contender en las elecciones presidenciales de 2024, han convenido en que sea el azar quien determine al elegido.

Según lo acordado, quien de entre ellos terminase con la máxima cantidad de dinero tras una ronda de apuestas, sería el indicado.

Cada que uno de los contendientes perdiera una partida, habría de duplicar el dinero de los demás jugadores, es decir, que habría de cederles un tanto igual a lo que tenían ya en el bolsillo.

Habiéndose sentado en fila, jugaron siete partidas y, por extraño que parezca, perdieron uno tras otro en forma consecutiva, estando el primer desafortunado en uno de los extremos de la fila y el último, en el otro.

Empero y para perplejidad de todos, una vez finalizado el juego, cada uno de los siete tenía exactamente la misma cantidad en el bolsillo: ciento veintiocho pesos.

El reto consiste en determinar cuánto dinero tenía cada quien consigo al empezar a jugar.

SOLUCIÓN

Designemos por J_1,\,J_2,\,J_3,\,J_4,\,J_5,\,J_6 y J_7 a los siete jugadores en cuestión y por j_1,\,j_2,\,j_3,\,j_4,\,j_5,\,j_6 y j_7 a las cantidades que, respectivamente, tenían en sus bolsillos al iniciar el juego.

Para comprobar la fidelidad de nuestros cálculos en cada etapa del procedimiento que desarrollaremos, conviene saber cuánto dinero hay en circulación. Si al finalizar todos tienen ciento veintiocho pesos, entonces

Esta ecuación entraña una utilidad oculta, pues nos permite expresar la cantidad de dinero de alguno de los contrincantes en términos de los montos que poseen los otros. Por supuesto, esto posibilita reducir en uno el número de variables involucradas.

A primera vista, el uso de \left(1\right) no parece sino haber complicado los futuros cálculos, pero como atestiguaremos más adelante, ocurre lo contrario.

Cuando J_1 pierde, J_2,\,J_3,\,J_4,\,J_5,\,J_6 y J_7 reciben de aquel otro tanto idéntico al que ya atesoraban, de modo que el circulante se redistribuye, quedando como expone la tabla siguiente

En marcado contraste con lo expuesto en el apartado anterior, donde para hallar la solución bastaron trece sencillas operaciones una vez que el sistema de ecuaciones estaba construido, ahora recién nos enfrentamos a la aparatosa tarea de resolverlo. He allí la ventaja del ardid que habíamos utilizado.
